Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918), co-founder and first president of the Vienna Secession is probably known best as Vienna’s most renowned and prominent artist in his era. So are his captivating paintings that mostly focus on the female body with a touch of eroticism.

His most famous paintings, or at least most known around the world, are Judith and the Head of Holofernes (1901), his 1907 portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer and The Kiss (1908).

A lot of history surrounds his paintings. The 2015 film Woman in Gold, for instance, is about his famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer and the legal battle of Adele’s niece to recover it and several others from the Austrian government.

Today, Klimt painting motifs are found on all kinds of items including apparel, umbrellas, coasters and more. “The Kiss” painting even showed up on a war-torn building in Syria.

On a recent trip to Vienna, I not only purchased a Klimt painting-inspired umbrella but I also enjoyed a delicious Klimt-inspired cake, or Klimt Torte, as it is known is Austria, consisting of chocolate and hazelnut. Just look at this rich golden color of the beautifully decorated cake. Yes, it tastes as good as it looks and I can’t wait to have it again soon. Fortunately, I won’t have to fly all the way to Vienna because right here in New York City you can have this delectable dessert at Café Sabarsky.

Café Sabarsky, which was co-founded by Ronald Lauder, is located within the Neue Galerie New York, a museum devoted to early 20th century Austrian and German art and design.

The art collection features art from Vienna circa 1900, exploring the special relationship that existed between the fine arts of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl, and Alfred Kubin among other well-known artists.
