Meet Dr. Michael D’Avanzo, a licensed chiropractor and the owner of Atlas Chiropractic and Spine Care located at 65 Broadway in New York City who is committed to relieving you of the pain that other treatments may not have been able to do.
Dr. D’Avanzo, or Dr. Mike, as he’s called by his patients, was introduced to the Grostic Procedure (the predecessor of the NUCCA Procedure) early on in Chiropractic College. He was immediately interested in the complexity of this procedure, and together with an interest in the neurology of the upper cervical spine, it ignited his passion for this kind of work.
“My clinical experience as a Chiropractor has demonstrated that many people are suffering from cervicogenic headaches that respond very well to chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine (usually C1-C3) which has been well established in the medical literature,” he explains. “A possible explanation for the relief of the conditions is that upper cervical misalignments may alter neural function by causing longitudinal traction (think stretching) and transverse traction (think twisting) of the upper cervical spinal cord and lower brain stem. Even if this tractioning is not pathological, stretching of axons decreases their diameter which will decrease the transmission of nerve impulses. This will decrease the homeostasis of the person as a whole.”
It is the misalignment of the upper cervical spine from the vertical axis as well as the head and pelvis that creates the neurological insult called the vertebral subluxation complex. In NUCCA terminology it is referred to the Atlas Subluxation Complex Syndrome which describes the spinal misalignment, the neurological insult and the variety of symptoms that may be present. A correction or suitable reduction of the misalignment will reduce this tractioning and provide relief and improve the overall function of the person.

The NUCCA procedure is very different from what people typically know about chiropractic. This procedure starts with high-quality x-ray equipment that must be laser aligned to ensure accuracy and decrease distortion of images. The patient must be placed accurately for each image and then the practitioner must analyze the films accurately. The analysis will allow the doctor to determine how the misalignment occurred and provide a customized vector (individualized for each patient) to correct the misalignment.
After the correction is done, the doctor will also take two post x-rays (again with accurate placement and analysis) to verify that a correction or suitable reduction to the misalignment has been made.
